Apollo 13 EVA cuff checklist

This faithful replica Apollo 13 EVA cuff checklist is the most intricate and visually appealing drawings of all the mission cuff checklists. The extraordinary history of the real checklist was that it was never used on the moon because an oxygen cylinder exploded in the spacecraft Service Module en route, knocking out the crew life support systems for the Command Module. The crew sought refuge in the docked Lunar Module for a swing-by of the moon and then fired it's engine to take both spacecrafts back to earth.

Experts who have curated flown Apollo cuff checklists sold at auction have confirmed the pages feel like the genuine Dupont Chronopaque film used by NASA. There is no glue, paint or plastic components used, it is made 100% authentically with all metal construction and rivets. The unique working design with a spiral binding screwed onto a curved arm brace prevents pages from turning accidentally. The checklist is supplied with an equally authentic 19" wristband using 1970's Apollo-era vintage Velcro hook and loop fastener to attach to the cuff of a space suit.

Jim Lovell's Cuff checklist on display at the Adler Planetarium

For comparison, the original flown artefact used by Jim Lovell  on the ill-fated Apollo 13 is available to view online at the Adler Planetarium webserver here (opens in new a window - click on pictures to enlarge.) In contrast, LM Pilot Fred Haise's cuff checklist is lost at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

The Apollo 13 cuff checklist has three sections: EVA-1, EVA-2 and EMU malf[unctions].

EVA-1 documents the Lunar Module egress procedure, antenna deployments, camera preparations, the flag and landing site panoramic shots and concluding with details on the deployment of ALSEP (Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package). Much of the EVA-1 section of the checklist is taken up with ALSEP and their four experiments.

EVA-2 was supposed to be a geological sampling traverse toward Cone Crater. This section includes a highly detailed hand-drawn explorer's map showing the circular route, with outposts along the way for taking samples and how to take, for example the trio of polarimetric analysis photographs.

MALF section deals with malfunctions and what to do if the vent, pressure, oxygen and water alarm tones sounded or the pump falls silent, and what should happen if the cooling or voice communication failed.

The cuff checklist comes with an aluminium clear topped display case for storage, wide enough to display opened pages.
